This is a glossary of some of the terms used in this site which may be new even to experienced Internet users.
Associate Programme
Working with another site for mutual benefit.
Browser
Programs such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox and other applications that let you browse the Web.
Content Managed Software (CMS) or often called Client Managed Software.
When a website is built using CMS anyone who can use a computer can make content changes and additions through a secure password protected section.

Direct e-Mailing
The on line term for direct mailing.
Domain name
Domain name refers to the address a user would type to go to the home page of your Web site. For example:"www.websitemarketing-uk.com "is our domain name.
Doorway Pages
Not an area we recommend. These are pages specifically designed for Search Engines that are not seen by the viewer. An old trick that does not work nowadays and will likely get you banned.
e-Commerce
A website that has on line shopping facilities. Like CMS current software gives the facility to easily update information without web design skills.
E-zines / News Letters
Avery effective and inexpensive way of communicating with your customers by sending them information by e-mail.
Home page
The primary page on your Web site generally named index.htm, home.htm, or homepage.html.
HTML
Hypertext Markup Language. HTML is the standard method of defining Web documents for display on the World-Wide Web.
Impressions
The number of times an advert is shown on a website. Impressions are in contrast to "click-thrus," the number of times someone clicked on the advert.
Indexed / submission
A search engine "indexes" your page when it adds you to its database/index. One method of notifying a search engine of your sites existance is by completing their submission form, an experienced web marketing agency will have more efficient methods than this.
Keywords / Keyword Phrases
Generally refers to any word or phrase the user might search for in order to find your Web site or a page on your site. The highest number of searches are in keyword phrases of three words. Without doubt the most important part of any Web marketing is to ensure your potential customers are going to find your site when they search using the most appropriate -"Keyword phrases" relative to your business.
Netiquette
Term used to define the proper etiquette or standard of ethics when using the Internet. It's very important that a business understands proper netiquette and follows those rules to be successful.
Pay Per Click
Where an advertiser agrees to pay when a viewer “clicks” on his advert, Google Adwords is a good example. Websitemarketing is an expert in all aspects of PPC.
Search
When someone on the Internet wishes to find something, they'll generally go to one of the popular search engines and perform a search on one or more keywords. Most engines will then rank the matching pages with the most "relevant" matches first. The position your page places in this list is your search position. It's very important you appear near the top of these lists to have a chance of people finding you.
Search Engines
Throughout our site we refer to "Search Engines", Google, Yahoo & MSN are the major Search Engines. A search engine is a Web site on the Internet that someone may use to find desired Web pages and sites. A search engine will generally return the results of a user's search ranked by relevancy. The formula- also known as the engines algorithm - for determining what is the most relevant varies for each Search Engine.
Search position
Results from a user search on an Internet search engine are generally ranked by relevancy. We will show you what position pages on your Web site obtain for a given search. Position is very important for your site's visibility. If you are not ranked near the top, most potential customers are unlikely to find you.
Site traffic / Hits/ Analytics
The number of visitors your web site attracts and where they go and how long they spend on your website. This information is very important for future marketing strategy, we arrange and collate this information into a useable format.
Spider
This term refers to the software within the search engine moving from one page to another on a Web site, it's purpose is to index the site and compare it's content to it's titles etc. and assessing the site to the compatibility of the Engines algorithms. Most Search Engines operate on a free basis so they do like to see the site presented "their way "which is usually different for each Engine, hence the need for customised submissions for each Major engine to secure high search positions.
URL
URL is a term used to refer to the complete address to a specific page on the Internet. For example, http://www.websitemarketing-uk.com/homempage.htm is a URL. Normally the portion "www.websitemarketing-uk.com" is called the domain name.
Visibility
Refers to how easy it is for someone to find your Web site when they do a search. If people can't find you easily, you won't get many visitors.
This glossary is not intended to be the definitive glossary of all web terms but of use to visitors to our site and some of the terminology we use, we can go all techie but the anorak's in the wash.
